History

It was not long after the establishment of Boonesborough and its outlying stations, and before Kentucky was even made a state, that the first Madison County church, Tates Creek Baptist, was established by hardy pioneers who had fought their way into the region that is now Kentucky, and Baptist doctrine definitely to its place in the community.
The church, which was organized sometime between 1783 and 1786, first met in a stone building located somewhere in the vacinity of Shallow Ford. The first building burned in 1850.
Some of the members gave some land to the church, and the present building we now occupy was completed in 1851.
In January 1786, Virginia passed the first act favoring the purposed seperation of Kentucky from Virginia. In September 1786, a convention was held in Danville to determine if it was expedient to constitute Kentucky as a state. Several members of this church served as delegates to this convention.
Our church is the mother church of several large and ministering churches in Richmond today. We are rich in history and faithful in ministering in this community.
It is the faith and willingness of individuals to make sacrifices that has rendered such recognition as the Commendation Award from the Madison County Bicentennial Commission and being listed on the National Register of Historical Places; and it is this same faith that will enable the church to continue to grow in centuries to come.
